A 39-year-old man from Exloo was sentenced to 270 days in jail for the kidnapping of his daughter’s friend, of which 195 days are conditional. He tried to get his daughter back in this way.
The man received help from his 21-year-old son from Groningen. He received the same punishment. Both were also immediately imposed on a contact ban with their daughter and sister. The judge finds the risk of honor killings too great. The contact ban also applies to the daughter’s friend and is for the duration of five years.
The punishment is the same as the Public Prosecution Service’s requirement. Both spent 75 days in custody.
The kidnapping happened in November 2023 in Hoogeveen. The battle between father and his adult daughter flared up when the young woman wanted more freedom. In addition, she put messages on social media, which her father bothered.
This resulted in running the daughter. She had a friend in the asylum seekers center in Hoogeveen. The father was told this via. The friend was lured from the center. He was held up for a cleaning job. The conversation continued in the father’s car.
His 21-year-old son was also in the car, who was also convicted of the abuse of his sister in Emmen. The ride went to a remote place in the forest. There the victim got a knife on the throat. He had to promise to move his girlfriend to go back to her family. The man was dropped again near the asylum seekers’ center.
The judge believes that father and son have given the victim a very anxious moment. They did this because they found that the woman had violated the honor of the family. The behavior of the father and his son not only had an impact on the victim, but also on the daughter.
The culture from which the suspects come plays a major role. The family is of Syrian/Kurdish descent. And comes from a conservative rural culture. There is the conviction that girls can only make a good marriage if they are chaste and have a good reputation.
Sons and fathers help them guard the morality and are their ears and eyes on the street. The family has been staying in the Netherlands for some time and is trying to adapt to Dutch society. The judge both holds them fully responsible for the crime committed.
