Farke talks about Weigl’s World Cup chances

Another Gladbach star at the World Cup? Borussia Mönchengladbach coach Daniel Farke still expects his new signing Julian Weigl to have good chances.

“I leave it entirely up to Hansi Flick which players he takes with him. But he also watches the games. Every good performance, every top performance helps,” said Farke after his team’s 5-2 (2-1) lead on Sunday in the derby against 1. FC Köln.

“I think it was an outstanding performance,” Farke said of the midfielder, who Gladbach had loaned out from Benfica in the summer.

“Outstanding in his passport selection”

The 27-year-old former Dortmunder was the strongest player on the pitch in eleven years at Gladbach’s highest derby win. “I found Jule really outstanding today in terms of his pass selection and pass quality. But also his work against the ball. He conquered an incredible number of balls and behaved tactically excellently,” Farke continued.

“For me he was one of the best players on the pitch.” Farke also referred to the “high quality in Germany in this position”.

The Borussia coach also praised Weigl’s comeback quality, who, like the entire Gladbach team in the 1: 5 at Werder Bremen the previous week, had caught a particularly weak initial phase. “It shows a great mentality,” said Farke, who deliberately did not change his team compared to the previous week.

“There was no question about that for me,” said the 45-year-old about the reaction of the team, which had “also earned credit” since taking office in the summer. In particular, Farke praised Ramy Bensebaini, who was weak in Bremen and who became a match winner with two goals against Cologne. “He also had a really bad day in Bremen. But for me he’s also the most complete left-back in the German Bundesliga and a top personality. He’s clear that I don’t question a player like that.”
