Even more competition for Marc-André Ter Stegen: FC Barcelona has extended the contract with goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny by 2027.
The continuation of the collaboration is “recognition and a prize for his great season”, wrote the Spanish football champion in a message published on Monday (July 7th, 2025).
Szczesny had returned from retirement in October 2024 after the serious injury of Ter Stegen and had signed the Catalans until the end of the season. The 35 -year -old Pole then won the place in the goal and won the Spanish championship and the Copa del Rey with coach Hansi Flick.
Joan García comes from Espanyol
In June, the traditional Spanish club had already signed Joan García (24) from the city rival Espanyol Barcelona for the goalkeeper position. Captain Ter Stegen’s regular place therefore seems to be in danger, according to media reports it is on the sales list.
Because of the continued high debts, Barcelona cannot afford an expensive replacement goalkeeper. As a possible new employer of the 33-year-old, the FC Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester UnitedGalatasaray Istanbul and AS Monaco traded.
Ter Stegen still has a contract that is valid until 2028. Sports Director Deco recently rejected the wish of the German national goalkeeper to talk about his situation. With Inaki Pena (26), another goalkeeper in Barcelona is under contract.
