The World Games in Chinese Chengdu are the next highlight in a pick-packed sports summer 2025. Here is all information about the major event.
From August 7th to 17th, the Chinese Megametropolis Chengdu will take place of “other kind” sporting events:, for example, tug of tug, cheerleading or life swimming. Over 5,000 active people from sports that do not often appear in the media will populate the 20 million-inhabitant metropolis.
What are the World Games?
The World Games are the big games of the non-Olympic summer sports. They are held every four years. The world games are organized by the World Association International World Games Association (IWGA) based in Lausanne. The President has been the Spaniard José Perurena Lopez since 2014. The German Joachim Gossow has been the managing director for 15 years.

Who broadcasts the World Games?
On the free streaming platform Live.theworldgames.org, there will be an extensive range with up to 18 parallel feeds during the games. It was not possible to determine whether and which broadcasters in Germany may show pictures in Germany.
What sports are there?
Competitions were originally planned in 35 sports. But because there were too few nations in a wheelchair rugby, the competition was removed from the program as with the edition in Birmingham (USA; shift from 2021 due to pandemic).

In these sports, medals are awarded for the 12th World Games: Baseball/softball, beach handball, archery, billiard, cheerleading, duathlon, fistball, flag football, floorball, fin swimming, Frisbeesport, Gymnastics, inlineskatting, Ju-Jutsu, Karate, Karate, Kickboxing, Climbing, Corfball, power trimmers, lacrosse, air sport, muaythai, orientation run, Pétanque, powerboating, racquetball, lifeguards, sambo, squash, dance sport, tug -up, wakeboarding and wushu. In different classes, 253 masters are sought.
How many athletes from Germany are there?

Which German athletes wrote history?
The most successful athlete in the history of the World Games is fin swimmer and diver Jürgen Kolenda. In the first two performances of the world games in 1981 and 1985, he won eleven gold medals: in 50- and 100-meter-length diving as well as in 100-meter, 200-meter and 400-meter fin swimming as well as with the seasons in fin swimming.
A special honor was given to the former lifeguard Marcel Hassemeier in 2025. As the most successful athlete of the World Games 2013 with four gold medals and a silver medal, Hassemeier was not only allowed to take part in the torchy run of the games for 2025, but was also allowed to ignite the World Games fire at the end of July. “The spirit that is transmitted with such a torchy run is very special. I was very happy that there is now also something like that at the World Games”Hassemeier said visibly impressed afterwards.
Has Germany ever been the host of the World Games?
At the third edition of the World Games 1989, Karlsruhe was able to receive the athletes. After the festival was celebrated in Duisburg in 2005, the world games in 2029 will be held again in Karlsruhe in Baden.
