Fan scandal leads to game abandonment in Zwickau

The third division game between FSV Zwickau and Rot-Weiss Essen was canceled. Referee Nicolas Winter was showered with beer after the first half.

Scandal in the 3rd division: After an attack on referee Nicolas Winter, the game between FSV Zwickau and Rot-Weiss Essen was stopped at half-time when the score was 1-1. The referee from Hagenbach, who was showered with beer, will now prepare a special report, and the sports court of the German Football Association (DFB) will have to decide on the rating of the match.

“It’s terrible, it’s horrible,” said Frank Fischer, spokesman for the FSV board, at MagentaSport. “Certain things just don’t work. That will have consequences. We have to do our part to act against it. We can’t use point deductions and sanctions in the financial area,” said the visibly shocked fisherman.

Winter was first verbally abused when going into the dressing room and then a fan in the main stand threw the beer in the middle of his face. Previously, after Dominic Baumann’s lead in Zwickau (36′), he had first shown Nils Butzen the red card for an emergency brake (45′ + 1′), then he imposed a hand penalty on the hosts, which Simon Engelmann (45′ + 3′) turned to compensate.

The fans then threw objects towards the field. Guest trainer Christoph Dabrowski was also caught by a beer shower. “We will take legal action on Monday,” Fischer announced on MDR.

RWE regretted the cancellation. “We had the momentum on our side after being sent off and then equalizing,” said Essen’s sporting director Christian Flüthmann.

In the best case scenario, Zwickau hopes for a replay. After all, the Saxons, as second to last in the table, are deep in the relegation battle of the 3rd division. According to Fischer, if the match were rescheduled, you would at least have “the chance of winning this fundamentally important game”.
