CThey are stars who stay on set until their last breath. Others instead they retreat forever or return because they have second thoughts. Still others who are forced to move away from the spotlight due to external causes, often a serious illness. The list of these famous or semi-famous actors who have retired from the stage (and in some cases returned) is long, but here is a list of the main ones.
Famous actors who have retired from the stage (and in some cases returned)
Most of the time, actors who have retired from the stage do so on their own initiative, sometimes decidedly eccentric. This is the case of Daniel Day Lewis who at the beginning of the 2000s decided to retire to Florence for some time, where he gets hired as an apprentice shoemakerto then return to the scene, announce his final retirement ten years later and then once again, after a few years, accept a new role on the screen. More often, the stars decide to dedicate themselves full time to their familyas in the case of Eva Mendes. However, the possibility of changing your mind is very frequent.
Withdrawals due to illness: Bruce Willis and Michael J. Fox
Other times, actors have withdrawn against their will, often due to an illness that prevents them from returning to the set. The most recent case is that of Bruce Willisaffected by aphasia and then by frontotemporal dementia. A return to the screen is unlikely for him, but there are other, more positive stories. Michael J. Fox discovered at the age of 30 that he had a form of juvenile Parkinson’s, but after years of absence he managed to take part in a show focused on his story.
Finally, there are some separate cases. Jack Nicholson has retired to private life due to an apparent personal choicebut fans think that the cause is actually something else. Alec Baldwin, on the other hand, was the creator of something as serious as it was fortuitous accident on setpaying a high price for the psychological consequences.
