Family unsuspectingly fishes dangerous explosive from Espeelvaart, bystander presses button for explosion | Noordoostpolder

A family that was magnet fishing caught an explosive from the Espeelvaart on Sunday afternoon. A bystander was allowed to help the grenade explode.

The find was made at the bridge of the Tollebekerweg between Emmeloord and Espel. After the magnet fishermen had viewed the strange object from a distance, they called the police anyway. He immediately called for the explosives experts. They established that it was not just an explosive, but an unstable high-explosive grenade from the Second World War.

In other words, left soup. The Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service (EOD) was then called in to defuse the grenade. To prevent a premature explosion, the EOD did not take the thing with them, but looked for a suitable location nearby to detonate the grenade immediately.

Bystander presses button

A field along the Pilotenweg turned out to be safe enough. A young bystander, unable to contain his curiosity, asked if he could detonate.

The men of the EOD weren’t the worst and let him push the button. This caused another big explosion. The black sand spattered meters high into the air.
