Facebook homepage broken up into tabs: one sorted like TikTok, other chronologically | News

Meta, the parent company of Instagram and WhatsApp, among others, announces a major visual change for Facebook. The home page of the mobile app and desktop website will have two tabs: ‘Home’ and ‘Feeds’. One will sort posts from all over the social network like TikTok does. The other shows you chronologically sorted posts from friends, groups, and Pages or people you follow.

The ‘Home’ tab is the first thing you will see when opening Facebook. In that part of the app and site, the algorithm will decide what to see first. As is the case with TikTok, you will also see posts from people or pages that you do not follow. “The system takes into account thousands of signals in order to see through the woods and arranges the content in the order we think you find most valuable,” claims Meta in a press release.

A similar sorting system for posts was recently introduced in Instagram, the other major app from tech giant Meta. There, the focus is now on large, full-screen photos and videos. Reels, the TikTok copy of Meta, also get more attention and the sound in the app is automatically turned on. That has already caused anger among Instagram users. Among other things, they complain that they hardly see any pictures of friends.

As with Instagram, you can still view posts from friends and Pages you follow. This is possible in Facebook via the ‘Feeds’ tab, which is a lot more prominent than is the case with Instagram. There the posts will be sorted chronologically, without videos or photos recommended by an algorithm. Advertisements will of course remain present.

The update is currently rolling out and will be available for everyone to see in the mobile app within the next few days. “In the coming weeks, the feature will also come to desktop,” Meta tells our editors.
