F1 Silverstone, Hamilton: “I have faith in Mercedes”

The star rider and his home race: “At Silverstone, the crowd pushes you like a wave. Here we have a new wing, but the effectiveness of the updates won’t influence my decision on renewal: it will be decided before the end of the season and I know we can reach the level we want”

Lewis Hamilton is the landlord in the British GP, where he has triumphed eight times, more than anyone else. The Mercedes driver is happy to go back to basics and doesn’t hide his emotions thinking about his first steps on this track: “It’s the best GP, I remember that in my first race here I also had an accident and that the layout was different. A 13-14 years in Formula Renault I dreamed of a cockpit and it seemed to me that I had already done a fantastic journey and instead the best was yet to come…”.

on the wave of the public

The warmth of the audience can really be an extra boost. “Here for the first time I had the sensation that the roar of the audience exceeded the noise of the engine – says Hamilton -, it’s like sailing on the thrust of the crowd and you receive a positive energy. Mansell says that here the incitement of the it’s worth half a second: maybe! We really need it”.

trust in the star

Only fourth in the World Championship and fresh from an Austrian GP that finished just in 8th place, Hamilton thus analyzes Mercedes’ momentum and its prospects within the Star: “We’re just back from a tough GP, but they are races like that of Zeltwegs that help us close ranks and transform negative things into positive energy – says Lewis – Here we bring a new front wing and hopefully it will be another step in the right direction: it’s not a completely new package, but we proceed small step”. The update chapter and how much progress they can bring on the performance of the single-seater between now and the end of the season could also be linked to the renewal of the English champion, who wants a competitive project for the last contract in his career. “It’s not that the updates affect my decision: before the end of the season we will have concluded the negotiations for my renewal – says Hamilton -. I still have total faith in Mercedes, it takes time to reach the level we want, but we will get there with the work and continuing one step at a time: the updates are there, I push, we are in direct contact with technicians and engineers and I will give everything”.
