Explosion causes major fire in Purmerend home, sending one person to hospital

At 4.15 am last night an explosive went off at the house on Maasstraat. A fire then broke out and spread to two adjacent houses.

Images show flames shooting out of the homes. There is also a lot of smoke, which limits visibility in the street.

One person was taken to hospital with injuries. Four other people suffered smoke inhalation and were treated at the scene.

Local residents

The residents of the entire block have been evacuated and brought to safety. The safety region recommends keeping windows and doors closed and switching off ventilation systems.

It is not yet clear what exactly happened. The police will start the investigation once the fire brigade has the fire under control.
