Expensive spuds make chips more expensive | Interior

Dutch potatoes that are cut into fries have doubled in price in a year and a half. Prices are rising due to the dry summer and rising demand. This leads to higher prices for fries from the snack bar or from your own deep-fat fryer. And that while sellers do not even fully pass on the expensive beeper, reports Nu.nl.

French fries potatoes have risen sharply in price since the harvest in late summer. They are purchased from farmers for about 30 euros per 100 kilos, a historically high price. In 2021 that was still 10 to 15 euros for 100 kilos. Snack bars and cafeterias are struggling with those higher prices.

Frans van Rooij of chip shop association ProFri calculates that fryers will soon lose 17 euros for 10 kilos of pre-fried chips. “Some time ago it was still 10 euros. It is heading towards doubling.”

In addition to the more expensive fries, they saw energy costs skyrocket. For fear of missing customers, prices at the chip shop are only being increased to a limited extent, says Van Rooij. According to him, the price of a bowl of fries ‘only’ increased by 20 percent to about 2.50 euros. “Actually, they have to go up faster, but entrepreneurs are cautious about price increases. Only cafeterias or snack bars that have a lot of regular customers dare to ask an extra euro for fries.”
