To mark the 60th anniversary of the Pirelli calendar, the Ernst Barlach Society Hamburg is showing an exhibition with more than 200 images by renowned photographers such as Bert Stern, Sarah Moon, Emma Summerton, Richard Avedon, in the Barlach Hall K from Sunday until April 28th. The Italian tire manufacturer Pirelli has been awarding the artistic implementation of the Pirelli Calendar to well-known photographers every year since 1964. The calendars were never available for purchase, but were only given away to selected friends of the company.
“Once a synonym for aesthetically staged, high-gloss eroticism, the Pirelli calendar has undergone a remarkable metamorphosis in the past few decades. “Today it stands for the historical change in gender roles, sexual morals, taste and the ideal of beauty,” said the chairman of the Ernst Barlach Society Hamburg, Jürgen Doppelstein, on Friday. The calendar is “a mirror of contemporary society, it is a myth and a cultural phenomenon”. (dpa)
