English football is in mourning: Macclesfield player Ethan McLeod was on his way home after his team’s away game. Then an accident happened.

Footballer Ethan McLeod is dead. His club, English fifth division club Macclesfield Town, confirmed this on its website on Wednesday. The offensive player died in a car accident on Tuesday night after his team’s away game at Bedford Town. He was only 21 years old.

In the statement, Macclesfield Town revealed its deep sadness for the young athlete. “The news of Ethan’s death has shocked our entire club and no words can express the immense sadness and loss we now feel,” the club’s statement said. “The deep emotional wounds left by Ethan’s death will undoubtedly never heal.” One thing is certain, however. “Ethan’s living legacy will never fade, no matter how much time passes in the future.”

According to British tabloid The Sun, the accident occurred near Northampton at 10:40 p.m. local time. At this point, McLeod’s white Mercedes crashed into a guardrail. McLeod was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, according to the report. The reasons for the accident are still unclear.

McLeod was trained in the academy of Premier League club Wolverhampton Wanderers for ten years and also played two professional games for the club in the League Cup in 2023. The English first division team also mourned the loss of their ex-player. Academy director Jon Hunter-Barrett described McLeod as a “talented young man” with a “lovable character” who made everyone in the academy, staff and players get on so well with him.

The “Wolves” also referred to McLeod’s younger brother Conor. He plays in the club’s U21 team. “We are incredibly sad for Conor and his family,” it said. The club emphasized that it currently respects the privacy of the relatives, but at the same time assured them of its consistent support. “We will be there for her and Conor because they are an important part of our club.”
