French former Prime Minister Gabriel Attal has confirmed that he will stand as a candidate for next year’s presidential elections. Attal, 37, comes from the Paris region and heads President Emmanuel Macron’s political group in parliament.
Macron, who is exceptionally unpopular in the polls, cannot run for president for a third time under the current constitution. He is serving his second term and a successor will be elected in the spring of 2027.
Attal was prime minister for eight months in 2024. He was the fourth Prime Minister appointed by President Macron. His first Prime Minister, Édouard Philippe, has already said in 2024 that he will participate in the presidential elections.
