Ex-Hertha captain Plattenhardt without a club: “Everything was presented differently”

Open to moving abroad

Marvin Plattenhardt has been without a club since the end of his contract with Hertha BSC – and with a market value of one million euros before the update next Wednesday, he is one of the most valuable Germans. Leaving the “Old Lady” after nine years was very emotional, which is why it took him some time – but he is now ready for a new challenge, said the 31-year-old left-back Interview with the “BZ”.

“Of course I imagined it all differently,” admitted Plattenhardt – also referring to the situation at Hertha. “The situation was a little more difficult than expected from the summer of 2023 onwards. But I wouldn’t say I gambled away. It was also my decision to take a different path. But I accept that. You have to accept the situation as it is.” He has had “a few” inquiries in the past few months. From Italy, England or Turkey. However, due to his wife Sara’s pregnancy, the “all-round package” still “didn’t fit” in the end.

“Since few clubs are currently looking for professionals without a club, he is looking forward to a new opportunity from January when the transfer window opens again,” said Plattenhardt. “I have to be patient.” He has been working with a personal trainer since July and is keeping himself fit so that he can jump straight in if something comes up: “I do sports every day and am at a top level. (…) So there are still three to four good years left for me.”

Ex-Herthaner Plattenhardt isn’t thinking about quitting yet – open to going abroad

He hadn’t thought about ending his career yet: “It would be too early for me to stop now.” But the time without a club also had positive sides: “It was nice to switch off and do things for which you are interested Otherwise he doesn’t have that much time in his professional career. We visited our families and friends. I also actively supported my wife, who has built her own company and is on the market. There is a lot of work involved. But yes – my feet are tingling again now, I already miss football.”

Even though the seven-time national player, who played professionally for 1.FC Nürnberg in addition to Berlin, can imagine a new club in Germany again, he is attracted to foreign countries: “Of course I can also easily imagine moving abroad for the first time to dare to gain a new experience. Living in the south of Europe would be a new quality of life.” If “something cool” came along, he would agree, says Plattenhardt. “If it doesn’t fit, I don’t have to force it through. I am a person who has to feel comfortable in my club. I will then decide with my wife and child whether it makes sense.”

Plattenhardt also admitted that it wasn’t out of the question that he would sign another contract with Hertha BSC, where he was captain: “It’s true that even after the end of the season, contact didn’t break off, both sides had everything together once left open. But I needed some rest after the descent. (…) But I had the idea that I would definitely look for a new challenge. Hertha then brought in reinforcements in my position relatively quickly. There was no quarrel when we separated.”
