“Never really a feeling of trust”

Former BVB goalkeeper Roman Bürki has been playing in the USA for three years. Now he commented on his end in Dortmund-and criticizes his ex-coach.
Roman Bürki was under contract with Borussia Dortmund for seven years. In 2022 he was moved to the USA to St. Louis City, although he still had a contract with BVB until 2023. The goalkeeper had lost his regular place. BVB coach Edin Terzić has not been relating to him since the spring of 2021 after Bürki had failed for six competitive games due to a shoulder injury.
In an interview with the “Spox” portal, Bürki now looked back on this time. He believes that he had stood in the Dortmund goal without the injury, the Swiss said. Then he stuck against his ex-coach. “In retrospect, I think that this injury probably played the coach Edin Terzić in the cards at the time,” said Bürki. “I never really had a feeling of trust with him that I previously felt with other trainers.”
The new number one in Dortmund was Marwin Hitz at that time. After the degradation to number two, he was “totally flabbergasted”, said Bürki. “It hit me hard too.” He also showed little understanding for the decision. “If you don’t win games and the goalkeeper gets one egg after the other, I would have understood it too.” But that was not the case in that phase. “The main reason that it did not go that way was not in my eyes. Even when Marwin Hitz stood in the goal, it hardly went any better,” said Bürki.
The 34-year-old in turn found praise for another former Dortmund coach: Marco Rose. After BVB boss Sebastian Kehl Bürki announced that the club would no longer plan with him, the coach ordered him to his office directly at the beginning of his term. Rose had emphasized that despite Gregor Kobel’s impending commitment, Bürki did not want to chase off the farm. If Bürki behave well, he can train and take the time when looking for the club, Rose is said to have said. “It was open and honest. I can only say positive things about Marco Rose,” said Bürki.
Meanwhile, the goalkeeper felt about the behavior of a BVB manager shortly before the cup final 2021. Marwin Hitz had injured herself shortly before the game, so Bürki had to go and received an SMS from the Dortmund management level before the game.
“It was not only a week before Marwin’s injury that I was supposed to look for a new club,” he reported now. “So at the time I no longer felt good enough for BVB. And then it comes to such an impersonal SMS with which you tried to convert to how well I am actually. Of course, I could take that seriously.” He described the fact that nobody came up with the idea of doing a personal conversation with him as “pretty bizarre”.
