Ex-DFL boss Rettig for Neuendorf as DFB president

Berlin (dpa) – The former DFL top official Andreas Rettig hopes that the amateur representative Bernd Neuendorf will be elected as the new president of the German Football Association.

“I know and appreciate him. He is an unencumbered, honest and reliable partner. He has proven that as president of my home association Mittelrhein,” said Rettig in an interview with the “Frankfurter Rundschau”. Neuendorf (60) will play against Peter Peters (59), who is supported by professional football, at the DFB Bundestag this Friday.

Rettig was managing director of the German Football League from 2013 to 2015 and now works as managing director of the third division club FC Viktoria Köln. With the election of the new DFB boss, he expects a fresh start, said Rettig – but not with Peters.

“I give my assessment based on almost 20 years of cooperation in different constellations, for example as managing director or colleague on the board of the German Football League,” said Rettig. Among other things, as a member of the supervisory board of the DFL, Peters “didn’t stand out because of his smart decisions. In addition, we have seen in his public appearances in the past few days that he does not have a moral sports-political compass and that he lacks the ability to self-reflect.”

That “someone who has been more or less involved in all DFB decisions since 2007 is now acting as if he had nothing to do with it and now wants to stand for a new start as a presidential candidate – with all due respect: I can only shake my head at that.” said Rettig.
