Ex-BVB coach with goal prognosis for Anthony Modeste

Anthony Modeste should compensate for the loss of Sébastien Haller at Borussia Dortmund. Peter Stöger knows the attacker from their time together at 1. FC Köln. He trusts his former protégé to play an important role at BVB.

Borussia Dortmund confirmed Anthony Modeste’s commitment on Monday evening. The 34-year-old comes to Westphalia from 1. FC Köln, where he is to replace new signing Sébastien Haller for the time being.

The Ivorian international will be out for several months after being diagnosed with testicular cancer.

Anthony Modeste at 1. FC Köln “an essential factor”

But can Modeste help the ambitious BVB at all? In any case, Peter Stöger has no doubts.

“At the times when I worked with him, he worked really well. He was a very important factor there,” said the former FC coach to “sportkrone.at“.

In the 2016/17 season, Modeste led 1. FC Köln under Stöger’s direction with 25 Bundesliga goals in the Europa League.

At BVB, however, the veteran has to function at an even higher level. “Probably a lot more dangerous situations in the penalty area are waiting for him there – and he’s still really, really good in the penalty area,” Stöger ventured an initial prediction and became even clearer.

20 goals by Anthony Modest for BVB?

“If he’s fit, if he’s in a good mood, then he can score his 20 goals every year – and especially in Dortmund. I’m convinced of that, I trust him,” said the 56-year-old.

Stöger knows both 1. FC Köln and BVB very well. Between 2013 and 2017 the Austrian was on the sidelines in the Rhineland, from September 2017 to June 2018 he coached the pros at Borussia Dortmund.

Modeste is now also moving from Cologne to BVB. The Frenchman will remain in the Bundesliga.
