He was last active in the highest German division in 2011 and then had numerous stations abroad. Now Michael Oenning is still breaking new ground.

Michael Oenning returns to the coaching business – in an unusual environment. The former Bundesliga coach will now work as an assistant coach at the Iranian top club Persepolis Tehran. The state news agency IRNA reports.

Accordingly, the 59-year-old has signed a one-year contract and is said to support head coach Vahid Hashemian. The aim is to lead Persepolis back to the top of the Iranian Premier League.

Oenning already trained the 1st FC Nürnberg and Hamburger SV in the Bundesliga. Most recently, in 2022 he was on the sidelines at the Austrian club Wacker Innsbruck.

Chief coach Hashemian (48) is also no stranger in Germany. In the Bundesliga, he played for HSV, VfL Bochum, Bayern Munich and Hannover 96. At Persepolis he was also active as a player. Because of his strong performance in the air duel, he was called “helicopter” in Germany in his active time.
