Ex-Bundesliga coach Bruno Labbadia goes to Italy in Serie A

Hertha, Wolfsburg, Hamburg, Stuttgart. Those were Bruno Labbadia’s last four coaching positions as head coach. Now it seems clear what his next task is.

Bruno Labbadia will probably go to CFC Genoa in Italy. This is reported, among others, by the well-informed journalist Fabrizio Romano. Accordingly, the German coach has agreed with the Serie A club. Labbadia is scheduled to arrive in Genoa on Tuesday to sign the contract and succeed Andriy Shevchenko, who was fired after just a little over two months in office. An official confirmation from the club about Labbadia is still pending, but there have been various media reports on Genoa’s interest in the past few days.

For the 55-year-old it is the first coaching job outside of Germany. So far, Labbadia has worked for teams such as Bayer Leverkusen, VfL Wolfsburg, Hamburger SV and Hertha BSC. Now the native of Darmstadt is heading to his parents’ home country. Labbadia therefore speaks fluent Italian, so there will be no language barriers.

A reunion with an old friend

The pressure in Genoa is immediately great for the 272-time Bundesliga coach. CFC is penultimate from 22 games with 12 points, losing 6-0 to Fiorentina on Monday night. Only promoted Salernitana has fewer (11). The gap to a non-relegation zone is six points. Therefore, points are urgently needed. The first opponent on Saturday is Udinese Calcio, a direct competitor in the relegation battle.

Then Labbadia meets an old friend. Because Lazar Samardzic is under contract with Udinese, whom he helped make his professional debut at Hertha BSC.
