For decades, Leo Windtner was in charge of the management of the ÖFB. Now he has died – during an excursion.
Austrian football has lost a formative personality. As several media report, the former ÖFB president and later honorary president Leo Windtner died of heart failure on Friday at the age of 74 while hiking on Traunstein.
“Leo Windtner led ÖFB and Austrian football with a lot of heart and mind for many years. He was a president who was close to humans and understood the sport as a connecting strength,” said the ÖFB supervisory board chairman Josef Pröll. “His decades of personal commitment, his visions and especially his charismatic personality will remain unforgettable and shape football in Austria for a long time.”
Windtner has been a vice president for the ÖFB Presidium since 1999. From 2009 to 2021 he was at the head of the association. After his farewell to the office, he was appointed honorary president.
