Hopes for a World Cup nomination

Coming as a great source of hope for the future, but never really finding his footing due to injuries: Corentin Tolisso (31)’s time at Bayern was mixed. The return to Olympique Lyon followed in 2022. His first two years there were similar to those in Munich. But all that seems to have been forgotten: Tolisso is having the season of his life. 20 scorers across all competitions, the second most of all French midfielders and with Lyon on course for the Champions League. More and more voices are calling for a nomination in Didier Deschamp’s World Cup squad. It would be the first appointment for the team since 2021.
“I think he is our best player. He is our captain, our leader,” were the words of Real Madrid loanee Endrick after the 4-2 win against Stade Rennes last weekend. With a goal and two assists, Tolisso played a key role in the success, which kept the direct competitor for the premier class at bay. Tolisso further increased his scorer account – 20 goals in one season means a personal best and plenty of self-promotion in terms of World Cup nomination.
With Rayan Cherki (Manchester City), only one French midfielder has more scorers; 24 in number. Tolisso is followed by Adrien Thomasson (14), who is under contract with RC Lens. There is also a Bundesliga professional in the top 10: Alexis Claude-Maurice (FC Augsburg) has nine scorers in 29 games.
Tolisso’s current form peak is also reflected in his market value. Despite his advanced age, his valuation rose again to 12 million euros after being valued at 5 million euros in 2024. The Frenchman had the highest value in the 2018 World Cup triumph (45 million euros). After missing the 2022 World Cup, Tolisso now wants to make a new attempt. It remains to be seen whether the arguments that Tolisso provides are enough for Deschamps. He always has his teammate Endrick on his side: “There aren’t enough words to define Coco.”
