English football icon Wayne Rooney returns to DC United and takes over as manager of the North American professional league MLS club. United confirmed this without giving any information about the duration of the contract. Rooney resigned from second division side Derby County in June.
“Wayne is a footballing legend and one of the most exciting young coaches in our sport,” said club bosses Jason Levien and Steve Kaplan. Besides, Rooney knows the league.
In 2018/19, at the end of his professional career, he was already a player for DC, which is currently the team with the third-worst points average in the MLS with 17 points from 17 games. Most recently, the team around German midfielder Julian Gressel suffered a 7-0 defeat at the Philadelphia Union.
