Even PSV players have doubts about penalty moment: ‘Don’t let me say anything about the VAR’ | Dutch football

Luuk de Jong mentions the 1-1 of PSV against Borussia Dortmund a ‘fair result’, but is of the opinion that there was more in it for the Eindhoven team on Tuesday evening. The all-time top scorer of the Eindhoven team in the Champions League also talked about the much-discussed penalty moment. Joey Veerman immediately had the feeling that the ball should not be on the spot.

“I think we were better with the ball,” the PSV striker begins his analysis in front of the camera RTL7. “They were waiting for the transition, they have many individual qualities there. If we are a little sharper in the early stages of the match, we can score one or two goals. Now you’re left unhappy. That is also the Champions League, but then you have to stand up and keep going. I think we did a good job.”

Debatable moment

“Dortmund tried to pin us high, but all in all we just kept playing football and came out well. That was our strength this match. Unfortunately, the final pass was not always good. It’s nice that we get a penalty, although I haven’t seen it again yet. I think it was questionable.” De Jong converted the penalty and became PSV’s all-time top scorer in the Champions League (nine goals).

The captain of the Eindhoven team sees plenty of opportunities in the return in Germany, which will be played on Wednesday, March 13. “I have full confidence in it. We showed good football today, we can do that there too. But we have to be careful, because they can score a goal out of nowhere in the transition. We are going to analyze that carefully.”

Let me not say anything about the VAR

Joey Veerman

“It’s not a bad starting position, but I wouldn’t have thought it undeserved if we had won here,” says Joey Veerman. “Malen shoots in from an impossible angle and we get three chances that you just have to take. We had better chances than Dortmund, so it’s a shame to be 0-1 behind. Fortunately, we have a team that can fight back and we made it 1-1.”

That 1-1 came from a penalty. “I didn’t think it was a penalty,” says Veerman. “Judging by Mats Hummels’ reaction, it looked like it was on the ball. Let me not say anything about the VAR, but this is very nice for us. The VAR was created to make the right decisions and they still forget to do that. We had him with us today.”

Bosz did not want to say whether he thought it was a penalty. “I saw an intense match and hoped that we would come away with the victory. At times we played good football, but in the final phase the last ball was just not right or the shot was too weak. Those opportunities should have been played better.”
