Eurozone retail sales rose as expected in September. Compared to the previous month, revenues increased by 0.4 percent, as reported by the Eurostat statistics office in Luxembourg on Tuesday. Analysts had expected this increase on average. According to the revised figures, sales had stagnated in the previous month. Initially, a decline of 0.3 percent was determined.
Compared to the same month last year, sales in September in the euro zone fell by 0.6 percent. A decline of 1.1 percent had been expected here. The development in the European Union (EU) was similar.
Month-on-month sales of food, beverages and tobacco products increased in the eurozone. However, they climbed the strongest in non-food items (excluding motor fuels) and above all in mail order and online retail. Motor fuel sales, on the other hand, declined. (dpa)
