EU: sanctions against Russia

The EU has adopted new sanctions against Russia. They are needed to exert maximum pressure on Russia to end the aggression in Ukraine. The most important measures in brief:

  • Ban on the import of gold and gold jewelry from Russia. Russia is one of the largest exporters of gold worldwide. This removes an important source of income for the Russian state.
  • Notification obligation for persons and entities on the sanctions list. There will be a stricter notification requirement for sanctioned persons or entities if they have assets and assets anywhere in the EU. Don’t they? Then they are in violation.
  • 48 persons and 9 entities are added to the sanctions list.
  • Extension of the export ban on dual usegoods. These are products, services and technologies that can also be used for military purposes. More information about the export ban? Also see Which products are subject to the sanctions? (rvo.nl)
  • Strengthen the implementation of the previous six packages. For example, through technical corrections and clarification of legislation. The Netherlands contributed to this on the basis of results from Stef Blok’s report. The six sanction packages will be extended until early 2023.
  • Clarification of exceptions in the field of agricultural and food productsincluding wheat and fertilizers. This clarification makes it clear that the sanctions do not in any way target the import or export of food and fertilizers.
