The handball players of SG Flensburg-Handewitt got a good starting position in the quarter-finals of the European League at GOG Handbold. The Schleswig-Holsteiners won the Danes on Tuesday evening with 29:26 (15:15).
The success in the European neighborhood duel, which was also described as “GOG 1 against GOG 2” on the sporting past of seven Flensburg actors among the Danes, achieved the guests through a consistent exploitation of opportunities in the final phase.
The best thrower of the game was Emil Jakobsen with seven goals for the defending champion and the also seven -successful Tobias Gröndahl for the hosts. With the victory, the North Germans have a good starting position to secure their ticket for the Final Four in Hamburg. The second leg will take place on April 29 at 8:45 p.m. in Flensburg.
“We take three goals with us,” said SG Managing Director Holger Glandorf after the game, but admitted: “But we know the handball, that’s nothing. We are very much looking forward to the second half in Flensburg.”
Time penalties bring Flensburg out of the concept
The SG took some time to find the game. After three minutes, Lasse Möller scored the first goal of the guests who played a two-goal lead in the following minutes (6th). But after two two-minute penalties for Johannes Golla and Möller, the North Germans lost their rhythm, Gog was able to go away on two goals (14th). In the middle of the first round, the Flensburgers caught again and led five minutes before half -time with 15:13, but afterwards the SG did not score any further goal and the Danes were able to compensate for the break.

There was also a tight game after the change of sides. Both teams acted at eye level, the game weighed back and forth in the hall in Svendborg with almost sold out. Thanks to consistent exploitation of opportunities, the SG led again after 39 minutes with 20:18 before the hosts went in front three minutes later.
SG Danes decide the game
The final phase not only developed into a thriller for the traveled and loud Flensburg fans. And then the Danes turned into a jersey of the Schleswig-Holsteiners: Only Emil Jakobsen transformed a seven meter (53rd) at 25:25, then Möller scored twice for a three-goal lead for the guests. With a five-goal run in the back, the SG did not take the lead that evening and kept their chances of moving into the final four and the European title.
