A few weeks ago, Sander Eitrem won a historical title with Norway. But the freshly baked European champion does not swim in money.
For more than 30 years, Norway had to wait for a gold medal in the all-round battle of a skyrocketing of the ice skating. It was time in January of this year. Sander Eisrem triumphed in the four -way battle. A historical event for the Norwegian team, after all, nations like the Netherlands usually dominate those competitions.
Even if Eisrem is at the top of his sport, the 23-year-old has to struggle financially. “There is not a lot of money in figure skating, so I really appreciate everything I get,” he explained to the Norwegian TV broadcaster NRK. He currently even needs pocket money from his parents. “You take what you can get,” said the freshly baked European champion.
With the help of a crowdfunding campaign, Eisrems should be secured sporty future and the winter sports ace will become more independent from the parents’ house. The former speed of ice cream chrios Fagerli Rukke launched the fundraising campaign. “The contributions are used for the necessary equipment and livelihood,” he explained NRK. The previous prize money from the EM and World Cup in the current season would only have earned Eisrem around 13,000 euros. Not enough to finance the livelihood.
For comparison: Each sixth-placed per race received 13,000 euros at the Alpine World Ski World Cup in Kitzbühel. “It would be great if you could live from the prize money. I hope that my good results can help me and my team to find sponsors,” said Eikrem.
However, the Norwegian cannot get yourself under the low prize money: “I want to concentrate on simply walking on the ice quickly and hoping that people will become a little more aware of it and are interested in contributing something.”
