DOW JONES–Brussels is launching a series of measures to strengthen its technological capabilities. The EU Commission presented a package on technological sovereignty on Wednesday. The proposed policy measures affect a wide range of technology infrastructure – from semiconductors to cloud services and data centers to artificial intelligence.

It is the latest move by the confederation to reduce its dependence on technology giants from other countries such as the USA. The Commission’s proposals, which still need to be negotiated and approved by the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union, come at a time when top EU officials have expressed concern about Europe’s dependence on non-EU companies for increasingly important technologies. This involves the operation of electronic devices, vital infrastructure and the storage of sensitive data.

US President Donald Trump’s second term has heightened tensions with the EU over tariffs and geopolitics and highlighted the urgency for the EU to become more independent. “We cannot afford to depend on others for the technologies that keep our hospitals running, stabilize our energy networks and secure our services,” EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a statement. “It’s about protecting our citizens, defending our interests and making our own decisions,” she said.
