The leading group of the race has grown: Lithuanian Aivaras Mikutis, who was previously chasing the four others, has worked his way up and is now right at the front. They are now over five minutes ahead of the main field.
05/01/26, 12:50 p.m.: Overview of the favorites
However, the drivers who are currently at the top are not among the favorites. The biggest name in the field is the Brit Thomas Pidcock, who, among other things, has already won a stage in the Tour de France. The Spaniards Ion Izagirre and Pello Bilbao also deserve attention. The breakaway group of the day seems to have been found. In any case, the field initially accepts that four drivers are ahead by more than a minute. They are Thomas Gachignard, Samuel Leroux, Caspar Kopecky and local hero Jonasrutsch.

And the professionals are out of Frankfurt again. Some drivers are still trying to get into an escape group – including Jonasrutsch from Erbach (Odenwald). Sprinter Max Walscheid, who actually has no chance of winning, has also been very active so far. However, the field is currently led by a French duo: Thomas Gachignard and Samuel Leroux.

The race picks up speed, the pace is the same. The first professionals are trying to break away from the field. People are currently pedaling through downtown Frankfurt. A total of 211 kilometers have to be completed – and more than 3,300 meters of altitude. The right efforts for the professionals will come later. The route is shown here in the video:
05/01/26, 11:56 a.m.: Degenkolb announced Contract extension
John Degenkolb is also at the start at Eschborn-Frankfurt this year. And not for the last time: Immediately before the start, the 37-year-old announced on the hr microphone that he would continue his career. “I’ve already had 16 years under my belt and can say: This won’t be the last time I’ll be at Eschborn-Frankfurt, but I’ll attack again in 2027,” said Degenkolb. His contract with the PostNL team would actually have expired at the end of the season.
