The criminal Hans-Joachim F., who was caught from preventive detention two weeks after his escape, is being treated in the prison hospital in Brandenburg an der Havel because of his poor health.

He was very weak and could hardly walk himself, said Justice Department spokeswoman Ariadne Ioakimidis on Wednesday. She called his health condition “serious.” During the search, the suspect probably no longer dared to look for shelter and may have slept outdoors and hardly provided himself with food. It is unclear how quickly he will recover.

The police arrested the criminal from preventive detention, who was convicted of sex crimes and manslaughter, on Tuesday afternoon on a high seat north of the center of Nauen.

Two weeks ago he was given leave and drove to Berlin accompanied by two judicial officers. In the Europa Center near the Memorial Church, he was able to escape while going to the toilet.

The Justice Department is still working on the case. “Internal talks are planned with the person in preventive detention, if and to the extent that his state of health allows it,” said the spokeswoman. Relaxation in preventive detention is hardly conceivable because of his escape. “The prognosis for him has certainly not improved,” said the ministry spokeswoman.

However, fleeing during his exit is not a criminal offence. “The simple escape is not punishable.”
