Equality defends the director of the Women’s Institute against criticism of transphobia

The Ministry of Equality has defended this Friday andThe appointment of Isabel García – former provincial deputy of Valencia and former councilor of Xirivella – as director of the Women’s Institute after accusations of transphobia and criticism from Sumar and Podemos, and has highlighted his work in defense of the rights of LGTBI people.

Sources from the Ministry headed by Ana Redondo have told EFE that the new director of the Women’s Institute is coming tovalidated by her resume both in private companies and in the public spherein the defense of the rights of LGTBI people.

After his appointment by the Council of Ministers this past Wednesday, groups representing trans people denounced that García “has maintained openly transphobic and anti-trans rights speeches” during the processing of the law for this group.

Her appointment as director of the Women’s Institute has also been criticized by Sumar, who has called it “unacceptable” and has opined that said institution ““It cannot be in the hands of those who belittle and insult women and LGTBI people.”.

For her part, the general secretary of Podemos, Ione Belarra, demanded this Friday the immediate dismissal of the new director of the Women’s Institute, Isabel García, and stated that “the transphobia “is incompatible with the exercise of any public office.”.

Igualdad defends García’s professional career and highlights that, both in the private sphere and in public institutions, she has always been related to team management and achievement of objectives linked to equality policiespaying special attention to the areas of sports, youth and equal opportunities between men and women, as well as the fight against gender violence.

It also highlights that between 2017 and 2021 she held the LGTBI Delegation of the Federal Executive of the PSOE and that she was the first lesbian woman to carry out this responsibility.
