Enkhuizen can tell the time again: wooden plates and hands from Zuidertoren have been replaced

Enkhuizen can watch the clock again. The oak plates and gold hands of the 65-meter-high Zuidertoren were considerably refurbished during the restoration of the church. Placing it back was the final piece of the tower’s renovation.

After climbing 12 stairs, the result can be viewed at a height of 30 meters. The hands don’t indicate the correct time yet, but for now Enkhuizen can move forward again. Refurbishing the dials was part of the work on the Zuidertoren, which included tackling the masonry and pointing and also restoring natural stone.

“It was also necessary,” says contractor Peter Rietveld of Pronk Bouw from Warmenhuizen about the replaced dials. “I think they were already 50 to 60 years old. Especially on the south and west side they were bad, because of the weather. They are oak boards that have been pulled apart by moisture. Now that doesn’t happen anymore because of a dovetail connection They keep the plates together.”

The Enkhuizers have to be patient for a while. Rietveld: “You can already hear the sound of the church bells and I think the hands will be right again within one or two days. I hope everyone in Enkhuizen can enjoy it again. It was a great project, in a beautiful city.”
