When turning, Lucas Akins overlooked a cyclist who died of the consequences of the collision. Now the punishment for the third division professional has been imposed.

A serious traffic accident that happened three years ago has now been dealt with legally. Lucas Akins, striker at the English third division club Mansfield Town, was sentenced to prison by a court in Birmingham.

Akins was traveling with his car near Birmingham in March 2022 when he overlooked a cyclist when turning right – with tragic consequences. The 36-year-old took the right of way to 33-year-old Adrian Daniel. Daniel suffered serious head injuries in the collision and died in the hospital ten days later.

The sentence for AKINS is now: 14 months in prison, half of which is exposed to probation. In addition, Akins is no longer allowed to drive a car for two years.

At the time of the accident, his then seven -year -old daughter and his seven -month -old baby were also sitting in the car of the football professional. According to prosecutor Carmel Pearson, Daniel was traveling with a helmet camera that recorded the course. The video shows how Akins continues on the athletes, but then continues and Daniel is recorded. It was too late for the cyclist to brake.

Daniel leaves his wife and stepdaughter. His wife Savanna gave up her work as a nurse after her husband’s death – everyday clinical practice was no longer bearable for her. Despite the loss suffered, she showed compassion: the family of Akins should not have to experience the same suffering as she should.

Akin’s defender Tim Pole said his client continuously thinking about the accident. It is a heavy burden that will accompany him for the rest of his life. The regret is sincerely, and his thoughts continue to apply to the victim’s family.

Akins played 80 second division games for Burton Albion in his career. He spent the majority of his career in England’s 3rd league. He has been playing for Mansfield since 2022. In addition to the English, he also has the citizenship of Grenada. He played seven international matches for the island state in the Caribbean.
