After a year, the time of Mats Hummels at AS Rome could end again. He is said to have made a surprising decision.
Last summer, Mats Hummels turned his back on his longtime club Borussia Dortmund and moved to Italy. At AS Rome, he initially had to struggle with adaptation problems and found no permanent place in the starting XI among the coaches Daniele de Rossi and Ivan Jurić.
It was only with the obligation of Claudio Ranieri in November that his role in the team changed, he was used more regularly – however, he did not become an undisputed regular player. His contract expires in Italy in summer, an extension is obviously not in sight.
As the daily newspaper “La Repubblica” reports, Hummels is said to have committed to return to Germany. He does not make his decision primarily dependent on sporting development. Rather, the defender should be the desire to be closer to his family again, it is said.
However, it is unclear whether this also means the end of his active career. According to the report, Hummels plans to move to the Bundesliga again to end his career there. There had already been speculation about a possible return to the German upper house in winter, but with its improved role in the Roma team, this topic initially took a back seat. Meanwhile, it remains open which clubs come into question as potential new employers for Hummels from summer.
Hummels have so far completed 14 games for Rome across competitions. He even scored a goal in the Europa League. For the Italian capital club, Serie A will be in series A AC Monza in Serie A. After 26 match days, the Roma is only on the ninth place of the table.
