Emotional Van Gerwen dedicates Premier League win to family

Visibly emotional, Michael van Gerwen stood in front of the camera after winning the Premier League. After a nerve-racking final, he won the tournament for the sixth time in his career. The darts player from Vlijmen does that after a difficult period.

“This does a lot to me”, said Van Gerwen with tears in his eyes in front of the cameras of viaplay† “Everyone knows what I had to do for this. We’ve had so many setbacks. You have to prove yourself again and again. This gives a lot of satisfaction.”

After 1.5 years, the Brabander wins a major again. The final against Cullen was an exciting match. With a 10-9 lead, Van Gerwen was allowed to throw before the game, but it seemed to go wrong. “Then suddenly I’m throwing like a wet newspaper and it becomes 10-10. In that last leg I throw out thirteen darts. That’s nice, but it was really nerve-wracking.”

“I’m not always the coziest at home”

When asked to whom he dedicates this victory, he responds quickly. “My family. I’m not always the nicest at home. You want to win titles, that makes me a happy person. Top sport is not always easy.”

Now the darter is going to rest for a while. He will have surgery tomorrow and won’t be able to play darts for a few weeks. There is then enough time to enjoy this victory. Something he’s going to do. “I am really very proud of myself.”
