EM victories over 400 m freestyle: Swimming pair Gose/Märtens ensures gold celebrations

On the last day of the pool competition, the German swimmers won two European Championship titles within a few minutes. Isabel Gose and Lukas Märtens provided the golden conclusion.

Berlin’s Isabel Gose secured the first German title at the European Swimming Championships on the last day of the pool competitions in Rome. The 20-year-old won the 400-meter freestyle on Wednesday (08/17/2022) in 4:04.13 minutes.

As the fastest in the Foro Italico, Gose went to the front right from the start and held the Italian Simona Quadarella, European champion over 800 and 1,500 meters, at a distance of 64 hundredths of a second (4:04.77 minutes) in the final sprint. Bronze went to Hungarian Ajna Kessely. The second German finalist, Julia Mrozinski, finished eighth in 4:11.32 minutes.

Strong gold performance by Märtens

Just a few minutes later, the German Swimming Federation (DSV) team was able to celebrate again: Lukas Märtens also secured victory in the men’s 400 meters with a strong final. Like his partner Gose before him, Märtens started the race from the front and ended up leading the way with the European Championship record of 3:42.50 minutes.

Second was the Swiss Antonio Djakovic (3:43.93 minutes). Henning Mühlleitner finished third in 3:44.53 minutes with the bronze medal, rounding off Germany’s positive final balance. In the final over 100 meters backstroke, Ole Braunschweig, third in the 50 m sprint, came in seventh in the victory of the Italian Thomas Ceccon (52.21 seconds).

The German swimmers won a total of eight medals at the European Championships in Rome, including a complete set of medals for Gose with gold (400 m freestyle), silver (800 m freestyle) and bronze (200 m freestyle).
