EM | Schüller on the bench: Popp storms against Austria

With Lea Schüller on the bench and Alexandra Popp as striker, the German soccer players are going into the quarter-finals of the European Championship against Austria.

National coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg did not have the goalscorer from FC Bayern Munich in the starting eleven because Schüller was isolated at the team hotel until last Monday due to a positive corona test and only took part in training again on Tuesday.

As in the last two games, Schüller will be represented by captain Popp from VfL Wolfsburg on Thursday evening. Otherwise, as expected, the Wolfsburg defensive forces Lena Oberdorf and Felicitas Rauch, who were recently suspended, and the recently injured Lina Magull from FC Bayern will return to the starting lineup at the Brentford Community Stadium. After Almuth Schult from Wolfsburg caught a flu, the DFB women only have one backup goalkeeper with them in Ann-Katrin Berger from Chelsea.

For Austria, Nicole Billa from TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, who scored decisively in the 1-0 win against Norway in the last group game, plays as the central attacker. A total of eight current players from the German Bundesliga are in the Austria starting eleven and three former ones.

The winner of the encounter will play next Wednesday in Milton Keynes against France or the defending champions Netherlands for a place in the final. These two teams meet on Saturday.
