EM – lightning comeback for Steinert: “Everything picked up”

Bratislava (dpa) – Even after his lightning comeback at the European Handball Championship, Christoph Steinert, who initially tested positive for the corona virus, was still surprised.

“In the hour before the game I suddenly had all the feelings in the world at the same time,” said the backcourt player after the 23:29 defeat in the first main round game against defending champion Spain and said in front of the ARD camera: “It was a huge mess.”

The 32-year-old, who had tested positive for the corona virus the day before, was unexpectedly available to the team of national coach Alfred Gislason in the game against the defending champion. “I got a call that I was falsely positive,” said the handball player from HC Erlangen. The three tests that were done afterwards were all negative.

“Then I picked up everything I found in my room. I put on a pair of pants and started sprinting,” he said. However, he did not have most of his equipment with him because he was not allowed to enter the team room.

Steinert, who failed to score, only arrived indoors when the German team was already warming up. “That was a bit crazy,” said his team-mate Julian Köster.
