EM in England | Svenja Huth DFB captain at the start against Denmark

Svenja Huth from VfL Wolfsburg is to lead the German soccer players onto the pitch as captain at the start of the European Championship against Denmark. The 31-year-old offensive player confirmed this at a DFB press conference in London-Brentford.

Regular captain is actually her club colleague Alexandra Popp. The most experienced German national player at the tournament in England with 114 international matches, however, only celebrated her comeback in the DFB selection in April after a serious knee injury. In addition, she was partly canceled in preparation in Herzogenaurach because of Corona.

In the German team there is talk of a trio of captains, and midfielder Sara Däbritz (Paris Saint-Germain/future Olympique Lyon) has already worn the captain’s armband. “Basically, Poppi was injured for a long time and Sara and I have been taking turns from game to game for the past few weeks,” explained Huth. “Now of course we also have to see whether Poppi will be on the pitch from the start in the next few games or not.”

At the end of a strong past season, Huth became German champion and cup winner and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League with VfL. She was European champion in 2013 and Olympic champion in 2016. Germany plays its first group game against Denmark on July 8 (9 p.m. CEST/ZDF and DAZN). Other preliminary round opponents are title candidate Spain (July 12) and outsider Finland (July 16).
