Elli Knuutila lives one day at a time with incurable lung cancer.
Elli Knuutila doesn’t really think about death. – Sometimes I wonder if I’m too naive, that I don’t know how to fear death, he thinks in the documentary “At the heart of the matter”. MTV3
Elli Knuutila42, dies when his medicine wears off. He tells At the heart of it in the document On the edge of death about what it’s like to live with incurable lung cancer. The documentary can already be found in Katsomo. It will be shown tomorrow Tuesday on MTV3.
Cancer was found when Elli was only 28 years old. He had been coughing for five weeks and began to feel pain in his chest. Elli thought that a rib was broken and that she would get a painkiller prescription. From that, he was completely sure that he would at least not have cancer.
– I Googled and as a result I was completely sure that it is at least not cancer. I read how rare it is. It’s really rare at that age, Elli says on TV.
Elli vividly remembers the situation when the doctor told her about the cancer. Considering the seriousness of the situation, his words and reactions seem inappropriate.
– The doctor was very excited about the diagnosis because it was so rare. He said it was a good thing for him professionally. I remember it very well.
Elli says on TV that even if the medicine sometimes stops working, cancer shouldn’t suddenly jump out everywhere. MTV3
Five years later, the doctor shook Elli’s hand and congratulated her.
– You are cured, he said to his patient, but he was wrong.
Elli suspects that she subconsciously sensed that there was actually no cause for joy, as there wasn’t. If yes, then the next years will be a relatively carefree life. He describes them as the best of his life.
Then came bad news again. Elli was 35 years old. The friend seen in the documentary recalls the conversation the women had at that time.
– I remember when you called and said that nothing could be done about it. It was absolutely wild.
Elli’s lung cancer can be treated, but it cannot be cured. At some point, even medication no longer helps.
– The power sometimes stops, Elli knows.
That’s why Elli focuses on living in the moment. He does not dream of traveling in retirement.
– I can’t do that. If I want to do something, it is important to implement the plans on a fairly quick schedule.
– I thought I would live forever. That image has been completely shattered. I won’t live forever, Elli says in the documentary “Asia ytimäsä”. MTV3
