Eline bakes thousands of ‘tastiest sausage rolls’ together with her father

It’s busy Thursday at the Nagelkerke bakery in Oudenbosch. Many people ask for Eline Nagelkerke’s (16) Tastiest Brabant Sausage Roll and orders are also coming in at a rapid pace. “So clever that you bake so well at such a young age,” says a woman as she pays for her sausage rolls.

At six o’clock in the morning Eline was already making sausage rolls in the bakery. She bakes about 3000 to 4000 with her father Jan. That is also necessary because the orders come from all over Brabant, but even from Enschede and Amsterdam.

“We deliver them by post and then have them in today or tomorrow,” explains mother Sofie Nagelkerke while she is busy packing. After Eline brought in the profit on Wednesday evening, a hundred orders came in within half an hour. “That is really a lot at that late time,” says the winner.

“At first I thought: this is not going to be him.”

Eline had been very happy beforehand with a podium place and did not see the victory in the election of the Tastiest Sausage Roll coming. “At first I thought: this is not going to be him, but then I turned out to have won. I really couldn’t believe it when they called my name.”

She has already received many congratulations and is happy with the title. “It’s also nice that my name is now on the big challenge cup between all the other winners.” All morning people walk into the bakery for Eline’s winning sausage rolls. “I heard her on the radio and I’m coming from Kapelle and took a detour,” says a man. “I just don’t think all sandwiches make it to Zeeland, they are way too tasty.”

“We are very proud, the carnival couldn’t start better here.”

The mayor of Halderberge will also drop by for lunch at the town hall. “There we actually live on sausage rolls from Nagelkerke,” says Bernd Roks with a laugh. “The baker’s profession was naturally instilled in her, but we are of course very proud that you achieve such an achievement at such a young age. The carnival couldn’t have started better.”

Father Jan Nagelkerke never managed to finish higher than second and is also very proud. Eline already won at the home bakers and is now the youngest winner of the most delicious Brabant sausage roll ever. “She is modest about it, but she has worked hard for it. Eline is now doing baker’s training and has spent a full day every week on her sausage roll.”

“I’d rather bake than be in the spotlight.”

Eline herself still has to get used to all the attention after her victory. “I’m proud and happy, but I’d rather stick to good baking than be in the spotlight,” she says modestly. She gives one radio interview after another in the morning. And that is immediately noticeable in the number of online orders and telephone calls.

Some companies want more than a hundred of Eline’s sausage rolls at a time. For a while, the webshop that the young baker and entrepreneur runs herself is down. “He seems a bit overworked,” she says with a laugh. After her own web shop and the title of the Tastiest Sausage Roll, she already has another goal: “An own bakery, although that will take some time.”
