After a major effort, the German women won the quarter -finals against France. The focus was on a woman.
What a drama, what a triumph: Germany’s footballers have prevailed in a nerve-wracking quarter-finals at the European women’s European Championship. After 120 minutes and a 7: 6 success after penalty shootout, the team is in the semi-finals of the European Championship.
Ann-Katrin Berger became the heroine of the evening. The German goalkeeper performed strongly and was the decisive factor in the penalty shootout. Berger parried two French attempts – and even converted a penalty himself. After the last 911 she sank to her knees and cheered towards her teammates.
It was seen on television pictures: Berger had attached a note on her drinking bottle, on which the preferred corners of the French shooters were apparently noted. But in the ZDF interview, the goalkeeper later explained with a laugh: “In fact, I never looked at it.” She relies on her feeling, analyze the players right in front of the shot. Even if she struggled with herself because she sometimes jumped too early – in the end it worked.
Could the note still play a role? In any case, at the last shooter, Alice Sombath, the analysis was correct: the right corner was marked on the piece of paper – exactly where she shot, Berger dived and held. During the penalty shootout, Berger regularly looked for a conversation with her teammates. Her message: “You can beat me in training, so you can do it against the goalkeeper,” she revealed in an interview.
Previously, the DFB women had played out more than 100 minutes. After the game, Berger emphasized: “Probably 110 or 100 minutes to stand on the pitch is a blatant work. I am incredibly proud of the team.”
