The discussion was fueled by the mistreatment of residents in a residential care center in Oudenaarde, De Branding care institution in Heule, and also in a residential care center in Gavere. Minister of Welfare Caroline Gennez (Vooruit) received a lot of questions about this issue in the committee.
According to Vaneeckhout, the structural problems have been known for some time. “The standards in elderly care are lower than in the care of people with disabilities, while both groups often have the same care need,” he says. “The managers in elderly care indicate that the 130 million euros that was released is insufficient.
