The children’s season at the Teatro Colón closes the year with the expected presentation of “The Sugar Plum Fairy”a one-act ballet designed to bring families, and especially children, closer to the world of great classical ballet, without losing the brilliance, emotion and magic that make Colón an irreplaceable cultural heritage.
The work will go up to the stage of its Main Room on Friday, December 19 and Saturday, December 20 at 4 p.m. and Sunday, December 21 at 11 a.m.. With a recommended age of five years and older, it is offered as a delicate and familiar invitation to dabble for the first time in the great classical repertoire.
“The Sugar Plum Fairy” It is an original creation of the Instituto Superior de Arte del Teatro Colón (ISATC), but deeply rooted in the fantastic universe of the famous ballet. “The Nutcracker”by the Russian composer Pyotr I. Tchaikovsky. The music, naturally, belongs to the great Tchaikovsky; while the choreography, stage direction and dramaturgy are in charge of Patricio Di Stabileand the musical conduction is the responsibility of Pablo Bocchimuzzileading the Colón Academic Orchestra.
The plot appeals to the sensibility of children and youth: three ISATC students, after a dance class, decide to stay the night at the Colón. What seemed like a common prank is transformed, as night falls and with the curtain silent, into a magical experience. The theater awakens, dreams become reality, and young people embark on a dreamlike journey through their desires, their desires and their future. It is there where they meet the Sugar Plum Fairy, and go through a passage of unexpected discovery and learning. A story that calls for valuing friendship, working together, fantasy and artistic vocation.
It is a didactic work, but with an artistic, aesthetic and high caliber vocation. Those in charge of bringing it to life are not only the dance students of the Institute, but also students of the Performing Arts Degree, with orientations in characterization and tailoring. In turn, they integrate the ISATC Youth Dance Company, the Academic Orchestra of the Teatro Colón, and the participation of guest teachers. The voice-over of the renowned acting figure Susu Pecoraro crowns a show that aspires to bring together the best of emerging national talent with the centuries-old tradition of the Buenos Aires coliseum.
The scenography, the setting, the lights, the projections – based on originals from “The Nutcracker” -, the costumes, the characterization and the technical coordination, are designed with the rigor and sensitivity with which the Colón usually assembles its productions. A comprehensive commitment, in which every detail contributes to the aesthetic and emotional experience of the spectators.
Deep down, “The Sugar Plum Fairy” It is not just a closing of the season for children, but a declaration of faith in the continuity of artistic training, in the transmission of a legacy, in the possibility of dreaming without abandoning the discipline. For those who attend, families, children who learn to watch dance, young people who begin their path in the arts, it promises to be a gateway to the world of ballet and a bridge to the future of dance in Argentina.
Tickets can be purchased online through the official website of the Teatro Colón, or in person at the box office located at Tucumán 1171, Monday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Sundays until 5 p.m.
Thus, with “The Sugar Fairy”, the Teatro Colón resumes its double vocation, that of preserving its artistic ancestry, and at the same time cultivating new generations.
