Eintracht Frankfurt: Mateo Retegui will probably be in Europe from the summer

Duel between Eintracht & Inter?

Becoming top scorer in Argentina, making his debut for Italy, scoring, attracting interest from big European clubs and most recently doubling the market value to €16m: this is a brief summary of the past few months for striker Mateo Retegui. In an interview with theGazzetta dello Sport” the 23-year-old professional from Club Atlético Tigre reflected on the time and gave an outlook on how things could continue for him in the summer.

“When my father told me that Roberto Mancini wanted me, I said yes straight away. We talked a lot with Roberto in Coverciano, especially about tactics,” Retegui said of his appointment to the Squadra Azzurra. The attacker was born in San Fernando, Argentina, but because of his Italian grandparents he also had a passport for the southern European country. “I never imagined that I would experience all this. Now it’s about preparing myself even better physically and mentally in case Italy should call me back.”

Since joining Tigre on loan from Boca Juniors in February 2022, Retegui has scored 30 goals and provided three assists in 53 competitive games. He made two appearances for Italy during the league break planned for international matches – and promptly scored twice. After the appointment, the rumors were not long in coming: Atlético Madrid was quickly considered a great prospect, but is said to have said goodbye to the race. A duel between Inter Milan and Eintracht Frankfurt for the services of the right foot could follow, from the Hessians there should have been an offer for a long time. However, the player may prefer Serie A.

About his future, Retegui said that it should be in Europe from July: “President Ezequiel Melaraña told me that I will probably be sold in the summer. I really like the idea, it’s a dream for anyone who plays football, the biggest are in Europe. I would like to come to Italy, but it’s still very early.” Nothing has been decided yet, when asked directly about Inter, the striker added: “There is nothing concrete, I don’t know what will happen: my father is responsible for the future . My head is 100 percent on Tigre.”

Transfermarkt expert on Eintracht Frankfurt’s target Retegui

The Argentinian first division club has agreed a purchase option for 50 percent of the transfer rights with Boca Juniors and should then generate a considerable transfer plus if it is sold in the summer.

Describing the goalscorer, Scott Christensen, Area Manager Argentina and South America at Transfermarkt: “Retegui was loaned from Boca to Estudiantes and Talleres where, while hinting at his talent, he was far from the player he is today. He will be the MVP of the Argentine League starting next Wednesday! Curiously, Boca didn’t bring him back in 2022 after a great season and this year he’s proving to be a complete striker, capable of holding his own against world-class defenders like those of the England national team. Retegui has received the necessary confidence from Tigre and his development is amazing.”

And further: “If the transfer is completed, the German fans can expect a very intense attacker who constantly puts pressure on the defense – similar to Julián Álvarez in this aspect – and fights for every ball. He’s a big guy and uses his body very well to assert himself in a battle for positions. Especially with long balls it can be a big problem for the opponent. He’s very strong and one of those attackers who’s always where the ball goes, which is why he was top scorer last season and is number one this season. I think he has a lot of potential, he can still improve, for example be a little calmer in the last quarter to end the attacks. Although Serie A would probably be the best option for him given his decision to join the Squadra Azzurra, he can certainly adapt to a league like the Bundesliga.”
