Trembling until the end: The answer to the question of whether the BTSV will play in the 2nd Bundesliga in the coming season is only available in the relegation. A look into the past gives little courage.

On Friday and the following Tuesday it will be against third division team 1. FC Saarbrücken to the last place to be awarded in the German lower house. After the catastrophic end of the regular season, a lot speaks at least on paper for the BTSV.

Just a look at the statistics is concerned about 16 duels since the 2008/09 season in the relegation between the second and third division. The subclass club won twelve of them. The second division team held the class only four times.

Even the direct duels with Saarbrücken hardly fuel optimism. In total comparison, the BTSV is narrowly ahead (10: 8). In the past nine meetings, however, one has only remained victorious twice. For comparison: the FCS prevailed in five games.

In addition, the memories of the last relegation games with their own participation so far should not taste good at all. In 2017, VfL Wolfsburg’s Lower Saxony duel was a place in the Bundesliga. The favorite “wolves” won both games 1-0 and stayed at the top.

But the BTSV does not want to let the bare numbers get down. The change on the coaching position is intended to relieve new forces and ensure a new impulse – despite the recent neck strokes at the end of the season.

That is also what club icon Marc Pfitzner is supposed to embody as a boss on the sidelines: a mess, will and passion can still be saved. And what should give a little courage: only the trust in numbers has never won a football game.
