The Pro-Palestinian activists of Eindhoven4Palestine have achieved success. The Eindhoven city council took their civil motion on Tuesday evening, and thereby explicitly speaks out against human rights violations and war crimes committed in Gaza. According to Eindhoven4palestine, Eindhoven is therefore the first city council in the Netherlands to recognize the suffering of Palestinians.
The petitioners found that Eindhoven is not sufficiently speaking out against the situation in Gaza. The Palestinian community in Eindhoven would experience a lack of recognition and support, partly because the Russian invasion of Ukraine was immediately publicly convicted.
Eindhoven4Palestine therefore wanted the Council to ‘take public and undisputed statement against human rights violations and war crimes in Gaza, and shows solidarity with the affected population’. The motion was assumed with 25 votes in front and 16.

“With this decision, the city council acknowledges that Eindhoven residents must be able to trust that their city administration respects human rights and international law unconditionally,” says the action group in a press release. “Without a distinction between population groups. With this decision, Eindhoven clearly distances themselves from selective empathy, and remains faithful to its core values of inclusion and connection.”
Since the outbreak of the war in Gaza, demonstrates regularly in Eindhoven. Campaigners wanted, among other things, that the Technical University broke its ties with Israeli universities. Protesting during Licht event GLOW and a council meeting was also disrupted.
