Eight dogs removed from controversial breeder by NVWA: ‘It took too long’

The NVWA took action on Friday to remove eight dogs from the controversial dog breeder in Eersel. This concerns the eight dogs that were to be removed by the municipality of Eersel earlier this week. But the municipality has to overcome so many legal hurdles to achieve this that the NVWA is now intervening. The dog breeder released the dogs himself on Friday, NVWA employees now have to catch the animals.

The NVWA visited dog breeder Jan Paridaans on Monday and saw that the housing for the animals was not in order. “The cages have sharp parts that the animals can injure themselves on, the floors are wet and we saw shy dogs again,” says Bjorn Elsenbrock, spokesperson for the NVWA.

The municipality of Eersel reported on Wednesday that it would remove the eight dogs. According to the NVWA, so much had to be done legally before the municipality could do this that it would take too long. “The dogs have to get out of there as quickly as possible, which is why we have now taken action.”

Obstructing the NVWA
The breeder released the dogs from the cages on Friday morning. According to the spokesperson, mainly to thwart the NVWA. The police are also involved in the action. Elsenbrock: “Unfortunately, we cannot enter the site without police protection, but the morning has been quiet so far.”

According to the zoning plan, Paridaans is not allowed to keep dogs at its location on Groote Aardweg in Eersel. The country’s highest administrative court, the Council of State, also concluded that he must close his company.

For every week that he still keeps dogs, he is imposed a penalty of 2,500 euros. This is possible for a maximum of ten weeks, up to an amount of 25,000 euros. Those ten weeks have now passed and that amount must be paid.

Earlier this year, the NVWA already seized 667 neglected animals from the bread breeder. The dogs lived on concrete floors, in small and dirty cages and had health problems.
