Third game, third victory – defending champions SG Flensburg-Handewitt are still showing no weakness in the preliminary round of the Handball European League. The Romanian club AHC Potaissa Turda scored 33:26 (18:13) on Tuesday evening.

Unlike before against Saint-Raphael Var (France) and Bidasoa Irun (Spain), it was a completely confident affair. SG coach Ales Pajovic’s team, which had to make do in Turda without Lasse Möller (fracture in the right metacarpal) and Emil Jakobsen (stress control), consolidated its first place in Group A with its success. The Flensburg team celebrated their 14th victory in a row across all competitions. It continues there next Tuesday with another duel against Turda, then in the home arena.

SG now expects SC Magdeburg to attend the summit

The first leg in Romania was a time-consuming task before a game that is far more important for the SG. There will be a summit meeting with SC Magdeburg in the Bundesliga on Saturday (8 p.m., in the live center at NDR.de). The league leader welcomes the first pursuer, who even has one minus point less. It is also – with changed home law – the duel that will take place in the quarter-finals of the DHB Cup in mid-December.

Flensburg-Handewitt moves away from Turda

The third-place team in the Romanian league kept the duel with the Bundesliga leaders open for twelve minutes (5:6), then Flensburg increased the number of hits without having to come close to 100 percent. It was enough to pull away from the hosts. Marko Grgic three times, Simon Pytlick twice, Patrick Volz once – and it was 15:10 (22nd) for Schleswig-Holstein.

And Grgic missed a few chances, including a seven-meter shot against the 40-year-old AHC keeper Mihai Popescu (19th). The Flensburg team, with Luca Witzke playing in the middle, went into the locker room with an 18:13 lead. It could have been a much clearer lead. With a 3-0 run, the Romanians gave their fans a little hope of the big surprise.

SG makes everything clear quickly after the restart

That quickly settled it. A 4-0 run by SG removed all doubts that the favorite would prevail. Flensburg’s goalkeeper Bejamin Buric gave the hosts their first ten-goal lead with a long throw into the empty goal, making it 25:15 (42nd). Pajovic used the remaining playing time to give players from the second row, such as Thilo Knutzen and left winger Jonas Rhitaphorn, some match practice. The most successful player on his team was Lukas Jörgensen with five goals.
